Fighting pollution with WasteAid

Today, one in three people worldwide has no access to waste management services and are forced to dump or burn their waste, causing disease, polluting the oceans and contributing to the global climate crisis. 9 million people a year die from diseases linked to waste and pollution and 5-10% of all climate change emissions are caused by the open burning of waste.

At Zumo, we feel as passionately about protecting and nurturing our environment as we do about cryptocurrency. We proudly support WasteAid – a young, dynamic and independent charity based in the UK, but with global reach. WasteAid works with local communities in some of the world’s poorest places to implement waste management and recycling programmes, improve people’s health and livelihoods, tackle climate change and prevent plastic from entering our oceans.

As part of our ongoing support of WasteAid, we are working on a feature that will allow Zumo app users to make micro-donations with every transaction directly via the Zumo wallet.

Our pledge

The partnership is one of common values: developing countries are driving global consumer demand for digital payments platforms like never before. These markets are expected to account for around half of all non-cash transactions worldwide and, for the communities in these markets, cryptocurrency payments can reduce the use of plastics and also protect the communities that need it most from the security risks associated with physical cash.

“Although blockchain technology and waste management may appear to have different purposes, in reality they are both about empowering communities and creating sustainable livelihoods, at scale.” – says Nick Jones, our Co-founder.

We will do all that we can to support WasteAid in its work to improve livelihoods and contribute to a cleaner and healthier future for all.

As of January 2023, we had raised a whooping £33,000 for WasteAid – read more here.

The road to South Africa

This year, we completed a variety of challenges that propelled us to raise collectively over £6,000 in 2022.

Together, we’ve made a 5,965 mile virtual journey from Edinburgh to South Africa, with pit stops at WasteAid project locations across Africa. You may have spotted us raising awareness of the incredible work conducted by charity WasteAid in Edinburgh.

Zumo’s 2021 fundraising challenge for WasteAid

‍In 2021, the Zumo team got together for a fundraising and awareness walk, which took place in Edinburgh on Sunday 3 October.

We completed a 16.5-mile loop starting in vibrant Stockbridge and ending in our home base of Leith. It was a truly great day engaging with people around Edinburgh which was topped by performances from our Zumo Mascots! We had set ourselves to raise £5000 in support of WasteAid, and exceeded this!
