Shaping the next phase of UK crypto regulation
The UK is entering an important phase in the development of its crypto and digital asset regulatory framework.
As policymakers move towards implementation, questions around industry readiness, transitional arrangements and the practical application of new rules are becoming increasingly important.
On 24 June, the Crypto & Digital Assets All-Party Parliamentary Group will host an industry roundtable in Westminster. The discussion will be led by APPG Chair Gurinder Singh Josan MP and Co-Chair Lord Vaizey of Didcot, bringing together policymakers and industry representatives to consider the opportunities and barriers facing the UK digital asset sector. Their roles are confirmed in the official parliamentary register.
The roundtable will provide an update on the progress of the UK’s crypto rules, including how firms and regulators can prepare for the transition into the new regime. Participants will discuss the importance of regulatory capacity, operational readiness and appropriate transitional arrangements for businesses affected by the forthcoming framework.
Stablecoin regulation will also form a central part of the conversation. This will include the Bank of England’s proposed limits on consumer stablecoin holdings and the need to balance financial stability considerations with the development of practical, commercially workable forms of digital money.
The discussion will also assess the UK’s progress against jurisdictions such as the United States, including developments connected to the US–UK Transatlantic Taskforce for Markets of the Future.
Other topics will include the development of a clearer taxation framework for crypto and digital assets and continuing barriers to growth, such as access to banking services.
Zumo Co-Founder and CEO Nick Jones will attend the roundtable to contribute Zumo’s perspective on how the UK can create a proportionate, competitive and workable regulatory environment for digital assets.
